Brief History of Insurance Department

The department of Insurance was created in the year 1997 out of Financial Studies department and Mr. G. Olotu was appointed the pioneer Head of Department in the same year. The Financial Studies Department was broken into three major departments, Accountancy, Banking and Finance and Insurance departments respectively. The department started with three core Academic Staff Members and two Corp Members as follows:

From inception, the Department started both National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes and National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) conducted resource inspection in 1997 and full accreditation in 1998. The two programmes were accredited by National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria (CIIN) in the year 1997 and 2003 respectively. Reaccreditation of the programmes take place at regular interval of five years by both bodies.

Facilities Available in the Department

Information and Communication, Technology (ICT): Insurance Department can boast of a state-of-the-art ICT Centre, financed by the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM)

Departmental Library: The department has its own library well-furnished and stocked with textbooks on Insurance courses and other related courses.

Programmes Available and Duration

National Diploma (ND) in Insurance - 2 years

Higher National Diploma (HND) in Insurance – 2 years

Requirement for Entry into Each Programme

Entry requirement into National Diploma (ND) programme  

Prospective applicant seeking admission for ND programme in the department must have minimum of five “O” level credits to include English Language, Mathematics, Economics or Commerce and any other two from the following subjects:

i. Insurance
ii. Financial Accounting / Book keeping
iii. Biology / Agricultural Science / Animal Husbandry
iv. Geography
v. Government / Civic Education
vi. Office practice
vii. Marketing
viii. Business Method
ix. Economics
x. Commerce

The results of the following examination bodies are acceptable

• WAEC
• NECO
• NABTEB

Entry requirement into Higher National Diploma (ND) programme

In addition to the above entry requirements for ND programme, prospective applicant for HND programme must have completed ND programme in Insurance and present evidence of one-year compulsory Internship Training.

The department of Insurance has a record of the following achievements:

• Annual Orientation Programme: The department organizes orientation programme for her new students (both ND and HND) annually, to the get them acquainted with the Department and the Polytechnic in general.
• Donation from the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria (CIIN): The Department of Insurance received the following items from Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria (CIIN):
 8 all in one brand new HP computers
 165 Copies of Insurance Course books
 Furniture to the departmental library
• Seminar / Workshop: The Department in its magnanimity has organized two seminars, titled:
 Capacity Building on Insurance Curriculum for Secondary School teachers
 Risk management and safety of Okada riders in Offa Local Government
• As the best graduating student in 2017/2018 academic session, Okafor Vivian was given scholarship grant for her professional examination by the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria (CIIN) to commend her brilliant academic performance.
• One of our students, Amole Korede, emerged the winner of the annual essay competition organized by Consolidated Hallmark Insurance Plc., as parts of her Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR) 2018 edition
